Spinal Decompression

Our practice uses numerous treatment methods in an effort to help our patients recover. One of the most common tools that we use to help our patients is called spinal decompression. This is a treatment technique that is designed to slightly increase the amount of space between the vertebrae. Using traction therapy, the vertebrae are stretched ever so slightly in an effort to alleviate pressure that might be irritating the nerves. There are several conditions that we can treat using spinal decompression. These include:

Herniated Disc: This is one of the most common conditions that we treat using spinal decompression. If someone suffers a herniated disc, then one of the discs between the vertebrae in the back has ruptured. As a result, the vertebrae now sit on top of one another. In addition to the irritation that is created when the vertebrae rub together, there is a lack of space for nerves to pass between these two vertebrae. We can use spinal decompression to restore the space between the vertebrae.

Degenerative Disc Disease: One of the most common chronic medical conditions that leads to back pain, degenerative disc disease, causes the discs in the back to dehydrate slightly. As the discs in the back dehydrate, they shrink. This causes the vertebrae to collapse on one another. This can compress the nerves as they leave the back, leading to shooting pains that travel down the legs. When we use spinal decompression, we can restore the space between the vertebrae, alleviating compression on the nerves.

Pinched Nerve: Finally, a pinched nerve can also lead to shooting pains that leave the back and travel elsewhere. We can use spinal decompression to alleviate the pressure on pinched nerves. Not only does this help people suffering from shock-like pains but it also addresses the root cause, preventing this discomfort from returning.

These are just a few of the many conditions that we can treat using spinal decompression. We take the time to explain how all of our treatment options work before we ever use them to help our patients. We work with our patients and view them as partners in treatment.
